What Is the Relationship Between College Graduation Rates And Quality?

GRADUATION RATES: A CRUDE TOOL
In truth, if a college has a really low graduation rate, it’s probably not doing a very good job with its students. If a college has really high graduation rate, it’s probably not so bad. But beyond that, it’s hard to get more specific. It appears that graduation rate doesn’t really measure quality so much as it’s just vaguely correlated with quality. Using graduating rates, as they’re currently tracked, to measure college value is, thus, not a very responsible decision. The article is in Washington Monthly.

  1. Completely agree. Thu number of graduated students matter (in general) because it shows the popularity of higher education institution. Unfortunately it does not guarantee quality. So, the quality and the quantity of students are different things.

  2. People may drop out of college because they did not come prepared for college. They may lack study and learning skills or they finish high school without the appropriate background necessary to be successful in college. They may drop out of college also for financial reasons. On the other side, high graduation rates may be in part a consequence of grades inflation. So indeed, simply counting how many students graduate from college does not tell the whole story.
